Peppol is an international network for the standardized and secure exchange of electronic business documents such as invoices, orders and delivery notes. Companies and public authorities can exchange documents directly and interoperably through certified Peppol Access Points.
A Peppol ID is required when companies or organizations want to send or receive documents through the Peppol network. It functions as a unique electronic address in the network and ensures that documents are delivered to the correct recipient.
Many European countries are introducing mandatory electronic invoicing. These include Germany, Italy, France, Poland and Greece, among others. Legal requirements vary by country and often apply both to invoices sent to public authorities (B2G) and to invoices exchanged between companies (B2B).
The 4-corner model describes the typical architecture of the Peppol network. Sender and receiver communicate through their respective Access Points, which enable the secure exchange of documents. In the 5-corner model, an additional central platform or authority is involved to validate data or monitor transactions.
To use the Peppol network, companies must register with a certified Peppol Access Point. After registration they receive a Peppol ID and can send and receive electronic documents such as invoices through the network in a standardized way.
